Frequently Asked Questions ...

What is Juniors?

“Juniors” volleyball is congruent to select soccer and other AAU sports inserted above the recreational level and sometimes referred to "travel ball" by other sports. It is the grassroots movement dedicated to get kids from all over the country to participate and excel in the sport of volleyball. It is unlike community league sports in that participants must try out and be accepted to a team to compete. The name comes from the former national championship, “USAVolleyball Junior Olympic National Championship”. Several organizations governing youth volleyball exist now, each as an improvement upon previous goals, and now adopting the term “Juniors Volleyball”.

When are tryouts?

Checkout our Tryout tab for dates.

Tryout Requirements?

Because BRVA is an AAU-affiliated club, our tryouts require that your player is an AAU member (see the Tryouts section).  Once a player is selected for the team, she will also be required to join US Volleyball Association in the Chesapeake Region.  If the player is already a member of USVA, the renewal will automatically place them in CHRVA.

How many teams?

BRVA will have one to two teams per age group for 12u - 18u.  Each team will hold a roster of 10 players with up to 2 practice players.

How are the age groups defined?

AAU, JVA & USAV have established a date range in which a player's birthdate must fall to be eligibile for that age group. However, if an athlete is capable of playing with an older age group, BRVA may allow it depending on several factors: ability to start immediately, maturity, team size, and/or need. The final decision will be left to the coordinators and/or the director and again will be based on what is best for the athlete. The current ruling date established to determine a players playing age is September 1 of the current year.   See AAU for more details.

Who are the coaches?

Blue Ridge selects a coach and assistant for each team.  Please see the Coaches page for his or her bio/resume.

What is the tuition?

See our Fees section on the Home page for more details.

How long is the season?

BRVA club season runs from November - April/May depending on age group.  Post-season tournament decisions to US VA Junior Nationals and AAU Nationals will be made by individual teams/coaches and additional commitment and fees may apply.

How many tournaments?

Number of tournaments vary from age group and individual teams. See Fees to determine how many tournaments for your age group.

How many practices?

Each team will practice 2-3 times per week (practice sessions generally last 2 hours). Access to our own facility allows for additional, unscheduled training and practice sessions during the season. The exact days and times will be selected when the team is chosen. Practice sessions for the middle school age groups may be adjusted during middle school volleyball season to reduce burn-out and injury.

Can I play other sports?

We try to be as flexible as possible with all of our players and their schedules; however, due to the competitive nature of juniors volleyball and the college recruiting process, we expect all of our older players to make volleyball a top priority.  A player's attendance is directly proportional to that player's improvement and success, as well as his/her team's improvement and success.
